Imam Barbahaari ุฑุญู…ู‡ ุงู„ู„ู‡ said in his famous book Sharh us-Sunnah:

โ€œAnd whoever denies or doubts a letter from the Quran or in anything

that the Prophet ๏ทบ came with, he will meet Allah -the Most High- as a denier. So fear Allah, be cautious and maintain your Emaan.โ€

Sheikh Saalih al-Fawzaan mentions in his explanation:

His (Imam Barbahaariโ€™s) saying [โ€œAnd whoever denies or doubts a letter from the Quran or anything that the Prophet ๏ทบ came with.โ€]

Whoever doubts anything from the Quran even if it is a letter, he is a kaafir (disbeliever), because he has belied Allah, or he doubts anything from the speech of the Messenger ๏ทบ that which is confirmed from him. Like the one who says โ€œeven if this hadith is confirmed from the Messenger ๏ทบ, I do not believe what is within it (the hadith)โ€ or he says โ€œ I am in doubtโ€ or โ€œ I will withholdโ€. This individual is a rejecter of the Messenger ๏ทบ, because what is obligatory is to have an unshakable belief in Allahโ€™s words and His Messengerโ€™s ๏ทบ words, and the person should not be hesitant or withhold in anything from it (Quran and Sunnah).

Rather he believes in all of the Quran and all of that which is authentically narrated from the Messenger ๏ทบ.

In all that has come from Allah and His Messenger ๏ทบ, one should not doubt or withhold. This is the path of the people of Emaan; to believe in that which is in the Book of Allah and in the Sunnah of the Messenger ๏ทบ.

His (Imam Barbahaariโ€™s) saying [โ€œSo fear Allah, be cautious and maintain your Emaan.โ€]

Fear Allah that doubt should occur in your heart regarding the speech of Allah or in the speech of the Messenger ๏ทบ or in the beliefs of Ahl as-Sunnah wal-Jamaโ€™ah. Safeguard your Emaan from falling into any of that.

The student of knowledge should make his intention for his pursuit of knowledge to defend the Shari’ah (the religion), because the Shari’ah is not defended except by men, just like a complete weapon. For, if we had weapons filled in storages, would these weapons be capable of shooting their missiles on the enemy (on their own) or is this not possible except by men (firing them)?

The answer is, this is not possible except by way of (the actions of) men, and this is also the case for knowledge.

Religious innovations are being revived and advanced, and you will certainly find innovations that did not exist in the first era (of Islฤm) and not mentioned in the (previous) books. Therefore it is not possible to defend (the religion) against these innovations except by the students of knowledge.

Q: Who is it obligatory upon?

(1) It’s obligatory upon every Muslim (male, female, young, old, free, or slave)

(2) Who has more than his and his dependents’ needs on Eid day and it’s night.

Q: If I am in debt do I have to give Zakatul Fitr?

You have to pay unless the creditor is demanding their money now, and you will have nothing left to give Zakat ul Fitr.

Q: Do I give Zakatul Fitr only for myself?

You pay for yourself and those dependent upon you.

Q: What if I’m unable to give Zakat ul Fitr for anyone else?

If you are unable you start with yourself, then your wife, then your children, then your parents (and you start with your mother than your father).

Q: Is Zakatul Fitr given on behalf of the fetus?

It is preferred to give Zakat ul Fitr on behalf of the fetus as it used to be done by Uthmaan (may Allah be pleased with him) but it’s not obligatory.

Q: When does Zakatul Fitr become obligatory?

It becomes obligatory when the sunsets and the new moon is sighted.

Q: Can I give it out before the time of obligation?

You can give it out a day or two days early but as for earlier than two days, it will not be accepted because it is not known from the Salaf.

Q: When is the best time to give it out?

The best time is on Eid day before the prayer.

Q: What if I give Zakatul Fitr on Eid day after the prayer?

If you delay it till after the Eid prayer it will be Sadaqah.

Q: What if I delay it till the next day?

This is considered making up for Zakatul Fitr and you will be sinful for delaying it.

Q: What is the amount given out as Zakatul Fitr?

A ุตุงุน sฤ’ of staple food that is eaten by the people of the land. E.g. Wheat, barley, dates, raisins etc.

Q: What is a ุตุงุน Sฤ’?

It is just under three kilograms and if you give out three kilograms you will be on the safe side.

Q: Can I give the value in money instead of staple food?

Giving the value in money is not accepted because it in opposition to the command of the prophet (peace be upon him).

Q: Who do I give my Zakat ul Fitr to?

It is given to the poor and needy.

Q: Do I give my Zakat ul Fitr to one poor person or a group of poor people?

You can give the Zakat ul Fitr of many people to one poor person.

You can also split the Zakat ul Fitr of one person and give it to multiple poor people. (But you have to tell the poor person it is not a full ุตุงุน Sฤ’, so they don’t give it out on behalf of themselves thinking it’s a full ุตุงุน Sฤ’.)

Q: Can I give my Zakat ul Fitr to poor people in a different locality?

What is better and preferred is that it’s given to the poor people of the locality you are in however if there is a need to send it elsewhere it can be done.

This is a summary of the speech of the scholars regarding Zakat ul Fitr.
